Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)
A Neuroscientifically-Guided Approach to Trauma Therapy
Developed by Frank Corrigan, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a specialized neuroscientific psychotherapeutic intervention designed to address traumatic experiences at their core. Traditional therapies can sometimes struggle to penetrate deeply into trauma due to overwhelming emotions or dissociation. DBR, however, focuses on the body’s physiological responses, particularly in the brainstem, to facilitate healing and reorientation.
Key Principles of DBR
- Focus on Physiological Responses: DBR therapists closely observe subtle physiological reactions, such as tension in the face and neck, which precede emotional overwhelm. This attention helps individuals remain grounded in the present moment, preventing emotional flooding and disconnection from reality.
- Non-verbal Approach: Unlike traditional therapies that rely heavily on verbal processing or exposure to traumatic memories, DBR centers on tuning into the body’s signals and responses.
- Role of the Superior Colliculus (SC): At the core of DBR is the SC, a brain structure involved in triggering movement responses and neck tension in response to stressors. This tension, often unnoticed, serves as a focal point during DBR sessions to stabilize individuals before emotional overwhelm occurs.
- Activation of Brain Areas: DBR also engages brain regions like the periaqueductal gray (PAG), essential for defensive and emotional reactions. This targeted activation allows for a systematic processing of trauma, leading to shifts in self-perception and reduction of trauma-related symptoms.
Holistic Healing and Recovery
DBR offers a holistic approach to trauma therapy, providing hope for comprehensive healing and recovery, particularly for complex PTSD characterized by intrusive symptoms, avoidance behaviors, derealization, depersonalization, and dissociative disorders stemming from early attachment disruptions.

DBR offers a pathway to healing that bypasses words and dives straight into the language of the body, providing hope for those who feel stuck in their trauma.

“The healing of trauma is a natural process that can be accessed through an inner awareness of the body.”
